Did you know that more than 80% of mattress buyers do not have a clue about what to look for when buying a mattress? Buying the wrong mattress will have a massive influence on the quality of your sleep. Lucky for you, this Ghostbed mattress review will ensure that you are in the 20% group that actually knows what to look for.

Ghostbed is one of those mattress companies that sells their memory foam mattresses in a box. There is a massive trend going on in the mattress industry and it looks like most mattress companies are starting to do this. This review will mainly be about the Ghostbed so let’s get started with the different layers.

The 3 layers within the Ghostbed

1. Natural latex

This layer is 1.5 inches thick. The latex is very responsive to the contouring of the body and plays a massive role in the comfort of the mattress. It is also a type plush in the firmness category which means that it is not too firm and not too soft.

2. Gel memory foam

This layer is 2 inches thick which are a little bit thicker than the natural latex. This layer is responsible for the cooling down effect of the mattress. The gel is formulated in such a way that enables it to absorb most of the heat generated by our bodies when laying on the mattress.

3. Support core

This layer consists out of the larger part of the mattress and is 7.5 inches thick. This layer also helps with support, but the main function is to increase durability. Most memory foam mattresses do not have a long durability and this is where this support core will make up for it.

Unpacking the Ghost mattress

Because this “mattress in a box” concept is quite new to most people, some tend to be a little confused on how to unpack these types of mattresses. Below I will give the steps on how to do just that.

  1. Open the box. Once your box is opened, you can take the mattress out very carefully.
  2. Cut open the bag. Inside the factory, the mattress will be compressed, vacuum packed and then rolled up. once the mattress is rolled up, it will be put inside a large bag.
  3. Position the mattress. Once the bag is cut, you can now roll the mattress up and then put it on the floor or bed foundation.
  4. Carefully cut the plastic. This part is very important as you do not want to damage your mattress. Take a scissor and cut the plastic in which the mattress was vacuum packed.
  5. Let it breathe. Now the mattress is open and now you need to let it breathe in order for it to take its full form. Overall the mattress is 11″ thick, but you need to wait a while until the mattress swells up in order to reach its full size.

Pros

  1. Great cooling effects. Memory foam itself is very sensitive to temperature and if you combine it with gel, then it becomes a great way to get rid of heat. This will result in less tossing and turning.
  2. Easy to travel. Because the mattress is compressed, vacuum packed and rolled up, it will become easier to fit it inside a box which will make it easier to travel.
  3. Little funny smells. Most memory foam mattresses will have a funny smell once you allow it to breathe. Luckily the Ghostbed does not have such a prominent smell once the cover is opened.

Cons

  1. Only one type of mattress. Because the Ghostbed only has 1 mattress type which is a type plush, it will not be that suitable for people that are dominant side or stomach sleepers as they either need a very firm or soft mattress.
  2. Too much sink on the side of the mattress. This can also be a problem but this does not just go for the Ghostbed as it is a problem for almost all memory foam mattresses.

For who is this mattress?

If you are someone that does not have a dominant sleeping position such as the side or back/stomach, then this might be for you. This works best for mixed sleepers. If you are also someone that likes a cool mattress, then this mattress will do wonders.

It also works well if you lie on the side of the mattress, but when you sit on the side, then it might become a problem especially if you are very heavy. Other than that, I think that the Ghostbed is a great mattress.
